Cardinal Opens School Year

Cardinal Antonio Cañizares-Llovera, the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, gave the principal address at the official opening of the academic year at Sant’ Anselmo in October.

Construction Projects Completed
May 25
The reconstruction of this roof of the atrium and the church at Sant’ Anselmo has been completed. Administrators also started a long-term program of reconstrution of all the roofs of Sant’ Anselmo. Much of the work was completed before the start of the school year, although some work is ongoing.

New Liturgical Institute Leader

Father Ephrem Carr, O.S.B., a Benedictine monk of St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana, and a long-time member of the faculty at Sant’ Anselmo, was elected President of the Pontifical Liturgical Institute on November 13, 2008. Following approval by Abbot Primate Notker Wolf, O.S.B., Father Ephrem began his four-year term of office in December. The Pontifical Liturgical Institute was established in 1961 by Blessed Pope John XXIII in order to deepen and strengthen the historical and theological study of the Church’s liturgy, which is the heart of its prayer life.

New Prior At Sant' Anselmo

Father Elias Lorenzo, O.S.B., will assume the office of Prior of Sant’ Anselmo in September 2009. As such, he will be responsible for the daily operations of a large and complex international community—home to Benedictines of many nations, cultures, and languages. The Prior is the Abbot Primate’s principle assistant in overseeing the growth and health of the Benedictines who live and study in the heart of Rome.

Father Juan Javier Flores Arcas, O.S.B., was elected Rector of the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant’ Anselmo on March 19, 2009, with his election being confirmed by the Holy See on April 3, 2009. Abbot Primate Notker Wolf, O.S.B. oversaw the process in which Father Juan Javier was elected by his colleagues on the faculty of Sant’ Anselmo.

Monsignor Crispino Valenziano Receives Honorary Degree

On May 24, 2007 Monsignor Crispino Valenziano, a priest of the Diocese of Cefalù in Sicily, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Sacred Liturgy Honoris Causa during a ceremony held in his honor at Sant’ Anselmo in Rome. A native of Cefalù, Msgr. Valenziano began his seminary studies there before being sent to Rome for further training. He completed his doctorate in Philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University and subsequently began a long and distinguished period of service to the Church as a teacher and scholar.

On Tuesday, May 16, 2006, the Apostolic Nuncio announced the appointment of Bishop J. Peter Sartain (pronounced Sar’-tin) as the Fourth Bishop of Joliet, Illinois. The new Bishop, who was installed on June 27, 2006, joins a growing cadre of Sant’ Anselmo alumni who have taken leadership positions within the Church.

Archbishop Lectures At Sant' Anselmo

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, drew from the Rule of Saint Benedict in a November 21, 2006, lecture at Sant’ Anselmo. He noted that modern civilization needs to discover a proper sense of the values of time, authority and participation if it is to renew its sense of purpose and enable communities to cope with modern pressures. Among those on hand for the lecture were, in the top right photo, Cardinal Walter Kasper, President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity in the Roman Curia (left) and Very Rev. Mark Sheridan, Rector of Sant’ Anselmo, who introduced the Archbishop.

Sant' Anselmo hosted the Congress of Abbots September 18-27, 2008. The congress, held every four years, gathers the abbots of all Benedictine monasteries, the abbot presidents of all Benedictine congregations, and the priors of dependent houses. The are approximately 260 monastic communities and approximately 230 persons attended the congress.
